Affordable decorating ideas for your home
Category General News
The year is still fresh and it’s not too late to spruce up your stale spaces at home. If you spend enough time in a room or a home, it can start to feel a bit drab after a while - leaving you yearning for a change. However, there’s no need to completely renovate and refurbish your home to achieve the desired results; a few affordable tweaks here and there will do the trick.
It is important to take your time, don’t rush, tackle one room at a time and the results will revive any room - from a simple touch of colour to showcasing your granny’s ornate mirror. Take some inspiration from the following ideas that will brighten your house and renew your love for your home.
No matter what season we’re in, a good spring clean is the first step to redecorating a room. Spend a day or two throwing away any clutter or items that haven’t been used in the last year - don’t be afraid to chuck out old magazines, kitsch sculptures or dusty ornaments that have faded from your attention. Donate old clothes, kitchen appliances and that old HiFi stereo that can’t read CDs anymore - items that may be useful to others are a great way to free up space and make you feel good at the same time. Put clutter that you want to keep into boxes in a cupboard, out of sight, such as board games or puzzles that usually sit on the coffee table.
An easy way to change the mood in a room is to move the existing furniture around to optimise space. It will take a few days to get used to seeing your furniture in a new orientation, but the results will be refreshing and can make a room appear bigger if done properly. Open up the floor space and try to align furniture with the walls so that nothing takes up more spaces than it needs to.
A new lick of paint will instantly revive a room - even if it is the same colour as before. This is a cheap way to make a big difference. Keep colours fairly neutral, such as soft pastels, as bold colours can be harsh and distracting. Paint all the walls, or just one wall, and then enjoy the mood in your new space. Paint your front door an unexpected colour (again, pastel shades work best), such as lavender. This will add a happy touch to the exterior of your home, as well as being a personal statement.
Accessorize with plants
One of the big decor fads at the moment is plant patterns on fabric. So, why not take this to the next level and add some actual plants to your home. The bright colours will pop and the plants will actually have useful benefits for the home. Naturally, you will want to take care of the plants and avoid letting them dry out, but there are many varieties that don’t require much attention or water.
Use those hand-me-downs
When doing a spring clean, it’s often difficult to get rid of the items that have sentimental value. Not to worry - you can actually make good use of those old mirrors, vintage chairs and wooden chests left to you by old relatives. With a little TLC and a fresh coat of paint, an ornate mirror can add drama to a hallway or entrance. Similarly, a quirky old chair or intricately-carved wooden chest can add character to a room.
Hang things on the wall
Besides the paint, walls can be dreary and an underutilised space in the home. Add some flair by hanging inexpensive canvases of beautiful scenery on empty walls. Why not showcase your artistic talents and frame some of the paintings you’ve created? You can even display those collectible plates by creating a pleasing installation on the wall. All of these ideas can add colour to a room, or invite a personal touch that will be pleasing to the eye.
DIY ideas from the internet
There is no shortage of fantastic DIY ideas on the web - so spend some time scanning Pinterest or home decor sites for unique ideas that often include repurposing household items, such as ladders and boxes, in creative ways.
There is no need to invest a lot of money into redecorating your home - only time. Spend some time cleaning, doing a bit of TLC, painting and shuffling, and the results will have you feeling happy in your renewed space.
