Things to do, where to go and what to see when you visit the Atlantic Seaboard in Cape Town

Welcome to one of the Atlantic Seaboard’s most affluent suburbs - Bantry Bay! The stunning area lies on the rocky coastline with far-reaching views of the Atlantic Ocean behind its shores. Locals enjoy taking gorgeous Insta-worthy pictures of the beautiful sunsets and, of course, enjoy the calmness of the wind-free area.

Where is Bantry Bay?
Bantry Bay falls in between Sea Point and Clifton, and is situated in front of Fresnaye. It covers an area of 0.32 square km with a population of about 820 people. Prime real estate in the area sits on the gorgeous Victoria Road and Ocean View Drive. Victoria Road runs parallel to the Atlantic coastline while Ocean View Drive runs next to Lion's Head. Bantry Bay is 67,3km from Cape Point, and is 7km from Table Mountain. The area is on the border of Lion’s Head, giving many properties an incredible view, stretching from Lion’s Head’s green shrubbery to the magnificent coastline of the Atlantic Seaboard.

The history of Bantry Bay
Bantry Bay was initially called Botany Bay. The reason for this name was attributed to a botanical garden which was planted in the area for cultivation of medicinal herbs. After the end of World War I, the name changed to Bantry Bay.

The first settlement was established in 1783, alongside Clifton. The affluent suburb is overlooked by Lion’s Head and visitors will notice an eroded outline of sandstone on the rocky coastline where it sits. Interestingly, on the seashore there is a plaque that commemorates Charles Darwin who visited the area. He made pivotal geological observations which related to the origin and nature of granite in the area.

Things to see and do in Bantry Bay

Bantry Bay is a quaint area which most Capetonians pass through to get to larger suburbs. There are a few restaurants in the area, and look out points to visit. Bantry Bay doesn't have its own beach, however a person in need of some salty waves can reach the beaches of Clifton by foot or Saunders Rocks, which lies on the border of Bantry Bay and Sea Point.

Lifestyle and property in Bantry Bay
Being one of Cape Town’s most affluent suburbs, you can expect to be in a secure prime real estate area. Most
of the accommodation in Bantry Bay takes the form of affluent apartment blocks perched on the cliffs.

Bantry Bay is known to be one of the least windy areas in Cape Town. The properties are secluded and often highly protected from the wind despite the Mother City’s notorious climate. The quality of properties bought and rented in the area is noteworthy, as they are mostly upmarket, attracting many South African and foreign investors. Larger properties in the area are typically located near Lion's Head - ascending the slope.

The properties in Bantry Bay differ in size, however the general size of a dwelling on the market is three or more bedrooms, with many having extra amenities such as pools, and entertainment areas.
