Happy National Women’s Day

Celebrating women in South Africa on 9 August

Women's Day takes place every year on the 9th of August. On this national public holiday, South Africans commemorate the 1956 march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. 61 years ago, over 20 000 women marched against the notorious pass laws which required South Africans to carry a book for identification purposes if people were classified as “black” under The Population Registration Act.

The significance of this day has allowed South Africans to enjoy a national public holiday since 1994. Many believe that along with the commemoration of past events, South Africans should also spend the day celebrating the women in our lives.

Patricia de Lille said that as women, “We must claim our rights and be part of the decisions which affect our lives.” We revel in the women who empower themselves and others on a daily basis. Happy Women's Day to all the women in South Africa - we hope you are celebrated for all you do.
