Home Improvement; DIY vs Calling in the Pros

Category General News

It's an age-old question; should you do it yourself or call in the pros? Doing it yourself leaves you with the satisfaction of having accomplished something, knowing the exact quality of the work, and it saves you money. On the other hand, calling in a professional ensures you get someone who's got experience and has all the specialised tools, gives you peace of mind, and you have someone you can call in if something should go wrong. There's no definitive answer because it's not a one-size-fits-all question, but we've got a few guidelines to help you make your decision.

How Handy Are You?

Let's start with the basics, how much do you actually know about home renovation and improvement? And be honest with yourself about your skills because unless you've got the time a small job can quickly turn into a drawn-out undertaking while you're trying to "learn as a you go". It's not only about how long it's going to take you; if you don't know what you're doing you might end up calling in a professional anyway, further drawing out the process and costing you even more money. Comfortable with your level of skill? Let's move on.

How complex is the job?

If you know your way around a toolbox there are man jobs that are simple enough to take on. Most cosmetic changes can be done with the right tools, a little knowhow, and good dose of patience. Things like basic finishes including light plaster or mortar work, stripping woodwork, applying paint or hanging pictures (yes, that's considered home improvement), are all easy enough to accomplish, especially if you do your research beforehand. Similarly, light demolition jobs like removing unwanted fixtures, stripping paint, lifting tiles, etc, are generally low risk and safe enough to take on alone.

Heavy Duty Work

Once the job requires power tools and specialist skills we recommend calling in the pros. Even something that may relatively simple at the onset, like paving or laying bricks, can turn into a nightmare if you don't know what you're doing. We also do not recommend attempting any structural alterations without a professional on-hand, same goes for electrical and plumbing work. Whenever you do call in the pros, make sure to get at least three quotes to compare services and rates. Furthermore, get some references to confirm reliability and the quality of the work.

At the end of the day it comes down to what you're comfortable with attempting on your own, what level of quality you can live with, and how much you want to spend. If you know the answer to all three of those, then you're ready to get to renovating!
