Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication - Leonardo Da Vinci
It is that time of year when you are thinking about where you will be spending your December holidays, or even better, your family might be visiting you. In this case, your home needs to be in its ultimate form of sophistication, so let's declutter shall we? There are a few tips you need to begin the process to decluttering your home:
Have a starting zone
Choose one area that will be your no-clutter zone, whether this is a table, counter or an area on your couch - it needs to be a place where nothing is stored without a use. This way, once you have one area of clutter-freedom, it will hopefully create a domino effect in your home.
An item a day
This is the easiest way to start a process and with a simple one item a day approach, in only a year you would've thrown out 365 items. Don’t start with big stuff, start with papers or smaller items. It’s not a sprint; it is a marathon.
Always Oprah Winfrey it
Find piece of clothing in your cupboard that you might want to get rid of, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. Every time after you wear them, return the hanger to the cupboard facing the correct direction. After about six months you will have an idea of the items of clothing you never wear.
Find 12 items that you want to throw away, 12 items you are wanting to donate and 12 items that need to be returned to their proper home. The 12-12-12 challenge will almost in one swift exercise organize 36 items in your home. Make it a fun game with your family members, or alternatively, use it to secretly convince your roommate to clean up.
Visualization turns into actualization
Look at a room and envision what it could be and all its unused potential. You might find yourself shifting furniture around to make room for your new ideas and, in the process, clean out all the items that won't fit in your new room.
