Find out about the largest contemporary African art museum in the world
Welcome to the world's largest museum of contemporary African art - The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). The museum is officially open from Friday, 22 September 2017 at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District.
The museum is 9 500 sq m across nine floors with 6 000 sq m soley dedicated to showcasing the work and installations of leading artists like Marlene Dumas, Kudzanai Chiurai, Nicholas Hlobo and Nandipha Mntambo. With around 80 gallery spaces which display both Africa’s finest and travelling international exhibitions, there is also a floor dedicated to art education, a rooftop sculpture garden, a storage and conservation vault, a bookshop, a cafe, a number of reading rooms and a restaurant and bar.
The museum is the result of many years of planning, which was commissioned through a public/private partnership between Jochen Zeitz, a German businessman, and the V&A Waterfront with the executive director and chief curator being Mark Coetzee.
The V&A Waterfront has invested over R500 million to the infrastructure and construction of the development and Jochen Zeitz has provided many of his own pieces from his extensive art collection. He will also be responsible for financing the running costs and budgets for any new acquisitions for the museum.
Jochen Zeitz's collection includes works by Chris Ofili, Kudzanai Chiurai, Kehinde Wiley, Glenn Ligon, Marlene Dumas, Wangechi Mutu, and Julie Mehretu. Visitors can expect a state-of-the-art structure which combines not only concrete and industrial elements but also pristine white cubes with cascading lights to display the artworks.
The museum is open to the public from 22 September 2017 with free entrance in light of Hertigae Day taking place on 24 September 2017.
